- Convection heat transfer coefficient

- Quantifies the influence of fluid, surface, and flow properties when convective heat transfer occurs.
- Example: The total heat transfer coefficient is influenced by the thickness and thermal conductivity of the materials through which heat is transferred.

- Critical Reynold’s number
- phrase
- The critical Reynolds number is associated with the laminar-turbulent transition, in which a laminar flow becomes turbulent.
- Example: Note that the critical Reynolds number is different for each geometry.

- Friction Coefficient

- It is the ratio between the sliding force and the retention force exerted by two surfaces in contact.
- Example: Ice on a polished steel sheet has a low coefficient; while the rubber on the pavement has a high coefficient.

- Kinematic viscosity

- It is a measure of the internal resistance of a fluid to flow under gravitational forces.
- Example: The viscosity of some fluids is measured experimentally with viscometers and rheometers. A fluid that has no viscosity is a superfluid.

- Laminar flow

- Laminar flow or laminar current is called the movement of a fluid when it is ordered, stratified or smooth.
- Example: Laminar flow is typical of fluids at low velocities or high viscosities.

- Nusselt number

- "The Nusselt number is the relationship between convection and conduction heat transfer through a boundary."
- Example: There are many empirical correlations expressed in terms of the Nusselt number, eg flat plates, cylinders, inside pipes, etc., which generally evaluate the mean Nusselt number on a surface.

- Prandtl number

- It is a dimensionless number proportional to the quotient between the diffusion speed of the amount of moment (viscosity) and the thermal diffusivity.
- Example: In heat transfer problems the Prandtl number controls the relative thickness of the moment and thermal boundary layers.

- Reynold number
- phrase
- It is a dimensionless number used in fluid mechanics, reactor design, and transport phenomena to characterize the motion of a fluid. Its value indicates whether the flow follows a laminar or turbulent pattern.
- Example: In biology and in particular in biophysics, the Reynolds number determines the relationships between mass and speed of movement of microorganisms.

- Shear stress

- It is the internal or resultant stress of the stresses parallel to the cross section of a mechanical prism such as a beam or a column.
- Example: Direct shear forces are applied daily on fabrics, papers or metals, exerted by scissors, guillotines or shears.

- Turbulent flow

- It is one in which there are fluctuations in the flow all the time and the particles invade the path of the adjacent particles, mixing and moving in a random way
- Example: Turbulent flow occurs in a large number of configurations such as channels, pipes, reactors, whether they are biochemical, physical or nuclear.
